Strengthening Mathematical Learning through Integration of Literature Experiences (SMILE)

Research has shown that the use of children’s literature helps to increase math achievement (Hong, 1996; Jennings et al., 1992; ), foster interest in math (Ward, 2011), and promote math communication (Within & Gary, 1994 ; Moyer, 2000; Shatzer, 2011). 

SMILE is a literature approach to develop strong conceptual understanding, reasoning and communication in Mathematics. Such mathematics, presented in the form of stories using pictures and familiar language, enables our students to grasp mathematical ideas and concepts easily. The stories serve as contexts for discussion of mathematics and catalysts for our students to make connections to applications in the real world. Such stories also serve as vehicles for authentic problem solving.
